DEPARTMENTAL PROFILE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS

The Department of Economics at Marangi Mahabidyalaya was started   in the year 1990 along with the establishment of the college. At the time of establishment Mr. Mohan Boruah was the only faculty i.e. founding HoD of the Department.  During the year of establishment only General course was offered in the college. But during the session 2000-2021 the Major course was introduced in the college after receiving permission from the Dibrugarh University. The Major Course has been run by the following four Faculty members- Mr. Mohan Boruah, HoD, Ms. Kalpana Borah, Mrs. Dipty Tamuly and Mr. Nava Kamal Borah.

In the year 2005, the college was divided into two parts as Marangi Mahabidyalaya (Jr) and Marangi Mahabidyalaya (Degree) according to the guidelines of Government of Assam.  So, Ms. Kalpana Borah has remained in the junior section and the other three faculty members have run the department at degree level. In the year 2010, Ms. Monikankona Bodo (our Ex-student) joined our Department.

In the year 2004, Prasanta Borah passed B.A. Examination with major in Economics from our Department and he was the first Honours Graduate of the college. The Department inaugurated its Wall Magazine “Nava Prabhat” in the year 2007, edited by Dipankar Borah and it is the first Departmental Wall Magazine of the college. The Department also published an Annual Journal named “Eco-Dynamic” in the year 2009 edited by Dimpy Dutta, but due to various unavoidable circumstances the Department published the journal only for two academic years 2009 and 2010. The first graduate with first class of the Department is Basanta Bonia and he cleared B.A. final Examination in the year 2010.

On 25th January 2020, Mr. Mohan Boruah has taken the charge of Principal (I/C) of the college and on that day Mrs. Dipty Tamuly is appointed as Head of the Department. Now the Department is smoothly run by the three faculty members Mr. Nava Kamal Borah, Mrs. Monikankona Bodo including HoD, Mrs. Dipty Tamuly.

To prepare the students to understands, realized and to soul the social vice and obstacles and to make them feet for contributing to the socio-economic development of the surrounding areas.

  • To facilitate the inculcation of  moral, cultural & spiritual values among the youth.
  • To encourage the youth to fight against all forms of social evils and  superstitions.
  • To instill leadership role among the young in  order to develop environmental awareness.
  • To promote and extend helping hands to the nearby community and educational institutions in order to create a responsible attitude for the upcoming generation.
  • To maintain and create a healthy atmosphere of gender equity.

OBJECTIVES:

  3. To teach them Economics not as a subject but as an intellectual exercise in day to day life.
  4. To teach them the ways in which they will be self-dependent and self-employed by doing the various types of economic activities.
  5. To teach them about the dignity of labor, moral values and the ways for facing the current socio-economic challenges.

Course Offered:

Originally the Department of Economics offered General course in Degree level till the session 1999-2000. The Department received permission for opening Major (Honours) from the university during the session 2000-2001 and the Department has been offering Major (Honours) and general courses since that Session.
